Public Image Ltd – Poptones (live at the Old Grey Whistle Test)

A friend went to see PiL the other night, which reminded me about this gem I caught on late night TV some years ago.  Nothing Lydon did before or after ever bettered PiL circa the Metal Box album, where the blend of punk vitriol and off-kilter melody left most of his post-punk contemporaries in the shade, in no small part thanks to the extraordinary dub basslines laid down by Jah Wobble, of which this is an unrivalled example. The lyrics too are more sinister than anything Lydon ever wrote for the Pistols.
