Something Wicked This Way Comes

My Spanish ain’t what it used to be so I’m not really sure what’s going on in this website, except for the fact that there’s some fairly wicked music coming out of Mexico right now. The man behind 401 is Lauro Robles who produces under the name Lao and his stuff’s solid gold. Blending house, garage and dub with traditional Mexican pre-hispanic elements, it’s known as 3ball over there and sounds very much like UK funky stripped to the bone. John Peel famously said about Julian Cope, after a brilliantly mystifying session he’d recorded for the BBC, “there are some rum thoughts going on in that lad’s head”, and it’s a sentiment that could also be applied to Lao, whose music manages to be both mimimalist and complex, danceable and cerebral, perplexing and pleasing in equal measures. An exclusive mix by Lao for Club Soda Records is in the pipeline, so stay tuned for more sounds of the Mexican underground.
